Which Wheelchair Is Right For Me?

With so many different wheelchairs out there, it can be very confusing to sort through them and find the right one for your needs.  Here, we try to make sense and order out of the confusion.

Basic folding wheelchairs, commonly called Manual Wheelchairs come with many different variations.  And variations within the variations.  This post will deal with the different types of wheelchairs in a general way.  For more information regarding specific wheelchair characteristics, CLICK HERE.

The most basic wheelchair,  and the most affordable,  would be something like the Everest and Jennings Advantage wheelchair.  These chairs are built to last, are often on the heavier side, and do not offer seat height adjustments.  These chairs are perfect for those who are using the wheelchair for long distances, but aren’t sitting in them for a prolonged period of time.  They are good to have on hand as a spare, good for periods of short use, and stand up to a fair amount of wear and tear.

If you are going to be spending more time in the chair, but you still want a more basic wheelchair, consider a model like the Everest and Jennings Traveler SE.  This model is sturdy and built to last, but offers the ability to adjust the seat height, making self-propelling, and sitting, more comfortable as you find the ideal position.  In addition, this model offers a larger size than the standard options, as it is available in a deeper 20″ x 18″ size.

For those of you who are looking for a chair that offers a bit more mobility, you would consider a lightweight model.  These chairs are easier to push, and easier to maneuver in and out of the car.  In addition, lightweight models tend to have anti-tippers included standard.  The Everest and Jennings Traveler L3 Plus is a basic lightweight model, weighing in under 36 lbs., with an aluminum frame.    This chair offers seat height adjustments, as well as flip back arms that allow the user to get in and out of the seat easily.  Desk arms also provide a close -to -table fit for active or working individuals.

If you really want to go all out, get a wheelchair that has it all:  height adjustable seats, height adjustable arms, lightweight but sturdy.  The Everest and Jennings Traveler L4 provides all these upgrades and more.  With more options in sizing than basic models, and more choices in arms, this model may be pricier, but it is built to last out of steel, as opposed to the traditional lightweight material of aluminum, providing comfort and durability.

Need a transport chair and a basic wheelchair?  Spending some of your time on your own, and some of your time with an aide?  No problem, there’s something for you too.  The Everest and Jennings Navigator is a combination transport chair for use outside the house when someone else is doing the pushing, and a wheelchair that can be self propelled for when you want a little independence.  The model has wheels that pop off with the push of a button, and is the most lightweight option of the Everest and Jennings line.  Its unique design makes transport and storage easy.    However, this chair does not offer many variations in size or options for different arms or legs,  making it a good choice for infrequent or short usage, spares, or those who don’t need the features offered on the other models.
